This is a scene that was placed in my mind around four years ago which has a deeply personal meaning to me and is based upon the parable of the lost sheep found in Mathew 18:12-14 and Luke 15:3-7.
“If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them wanders away, what will he do? Won’t he leave the ninety-nine others on the hills and go out to search for the one that is lost? And if he finds it, I tell you the truth, he will rejoice over it more than over the ninety-nine that didn’t wander away! In the same way, it is not my heavenly Father’s will that even one of these little ones should perish."
In this painting, Jesus patiently watches that tiny little sheep in the distance as he is mesmerised by the mystery of the dark wood. The Lord never takes His gaze from the wondering sheep, He allows him his freewill to be curious but waits patiently for the sheep to turn to Him. Jesus is there, He's got him, He will not allow him to wonder too far beyond His sight.
As the onlooker, we may become frustrated with the waiting and the fear of not knowing why our prayers for God's protection and guidance for our children and loved ones are seemingly unanswered. We may wonder why God would allow them to go through certain trials but we must remember that He sees the bigger picture and, ultimately, needs us to turn to Him out of our own freewill! Some of the trials our family go through are lessons and experiences that will strengthen and prepare us for the future and without them we would certainly fail.
Often, God plays the long game with some of us because our life story is destined to become a powerful testimony to others. My prayers for this little sheep will continue but I feel so blessed to have the reassurance that God has 'got him' and therefore I am able to lay all my fears and worries at His feet, thank you Lord!
