A special moment between the resurrected Jesus and His disciple Peter on the calm shores of the Sea of Galilee.
We can only imagine how dejected and unworthy Peter must have felt after denying Jesus in His time of need, especially after he had vowed he would never do such a thing just hours earlier! However, despite this failure, Jesus showed Peter such grace, and reinstated him as His disciple in the very same way He first called Peter to follow Him. Jesus asked Peter three times if he loved Him to counteract the three times Peter had disowned Him; each time, he referred to a different kind of love. Our translation into English does not show this detail, but the original Greek version shows that Jesus refers to an unconditional, sacrificial love (agape) and a brotherly, affectionate love (Phileo) to confirm Peter's commitment to Him. By doing this for Peter, Jesus highlights the need for all of us to seek restoration, forgiveness and act on the call to serve. We all slip up from time to time; however, with the grace of God, we can be forgiven and be restored to our calling.
Peter went on to do remarkable things in Jesus' name - healing the sick, casting out demons and establishing the early church alongside his fellow disciples. If it were not for this moment, perhaps Peter would have spiralled into a world of loss as he blamed himself for the denial he showed the Lord.
The enemy will always look to remind us of our failures, but Jesus only seeks to forgive us. By us seeking forgiveness, we receive the freedom to not dwell on the failures of our past, but live in the present, moving forward on the path prepared for us by Him!
